March 4, 2009: In which the girls get to know The Littlest Edward a little better.

"But you don’t have any fangs. En't you a vampire? You’re s'posed to have fangs."

"My kind do not have fangs," he said stiffly.

"So how did you kill them? Did you chew them to death?"

"I ripped out their throats and sucked their veins dry."

"I wanna see you do that sometime," said Lyra, enchanted. "Can I see you do that?"

Notes

  • All the "vampire smells" allude to something about the dolls' character of origin--Lyra's refers to the "Marzipan" chapter of The Amber Spyglass, whereas "snowdrops" was the best translation I could find for niphedril. Galadriel was more of a guess, although she said that jasmine was like elanor in The Starry Mantle; laurel was supposed to represent the mallorn tree. "Forget-me-nots" was an even bigger stretch, mostly referring to the fact that "Purple Arwen" the doll is from the scene in Fellowship of the Ring (movie version) where Arwen bids Aragorn goodbye.

  • Lyra also asked each Faramir if they had ever killed anyone.

  • According to the books, Twilight vampires do not, in fact, have fangs.

  • "You must never see me do that!" is an allusion to the scene in Twilight (book version) where Bella asks if she can watch Edward hunt.
